Dry Eye Treatment
DRY EYE CARE • HEIDELBERG
Dry, gritty or irritated eyes?
Dry eye can cause burning, watering, redness, fluctuating vision and persistent discomfort. At Warringal Optometrists, we assess what may be contributing to your symptoms and recommend treatment based on what we find.
Leave your name and phone number and our team will contact you to discuss your symptoms.
Not all dry eye is the same
Dry-eye symptoms can have different contributing factors, including problems with the tear film and the oil-producing meibomian glands along the eyelids.
That is why treatment should start with an assessment rather than simply adding another eye drop.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR SYMPTOMS
Why do my eyes feel dry?
The surface of your eye relies on a healthy tear film for comfort and clear vision. When that tear film becomes unstable, your eyes may feel dry, gritty, burning or tired — and sometimes dry eyes can actually cause excessive watering.
An assessment helps your optometrist identify likely contributing factors and discuss appropriate management options.
Dry or gritty eyes
A sandy, scratchy or foreign-body sensation can be associated with an unstable ocular surface.
Watery eyes
Excess watering can sometimes occur when the eye surface becomes irritated or the tear film is unstable.
Red or burning eyes
Persistent irritation, burning and redness are common reasons patients seek a dry-eye assessment.
Tired eyes
Eye discomfort can become more noticeable during prolonged reading, computer work or other visually demanding activities.
Fluctuating vision
A poor-quality tear film can sometimes contribute to vision that varies between blinks.
Contact lens discomfort
Dryness can make contact lenses increasingly uncomfortable, particularly later in the day.
STILL NOT GETTING RELIEF?
Tried eye drops, warm compresses or supplements — but your symptoms keep coming back?
Many people with persistent dry-eye symptoms have already tried several products or home treatments before seeking a more detailed assessment.
Eye drops only help for a little while
You may find yourself reaching for lubricating drops throughout the day, only for the dryness, burning or grittiness to return soon afterwards.
You’ve tried different drops without knowing which one is right
Not all dry eye is the same, and different eye drops are designed for different tear-film and ocular-surface needs. Trying another product may not address what is actually contributing to your symptoms.
Warm compresses haven’t been enough
Warm compresses can support eyelid and meibomian gland care, but some people still experience ongoing dryness, watering or irritation despite using them regularly.
You’re overwhelmed by supplements and dry-eye products
Omega-3s, eye drops, gels, sprays, eyelid products and supplements can all be discussed in dry-eye care. With so many choices, it can be difficult to know what — if anything — is appropriate for you.
Your contact lenses aren’t as comfortable as they used to be
Your lenses may feel comfortable initially but become dry, irritating or uncomfortable later in the day, even after changing brands or wearing schedules.
You’ve been managing the symptoms without knowing the cause
You may have tried several different approaches without anyone clearly explaining what is contributing to your dry eye or why the symptoms keep returning.
Stop guessing. Start by understanding what’s contributing to the problem.
Dry eye isn’t one single condition with one single solution. Your tear film, eyelids, meibomian glands and other factors can all contribute to similar symptoms.
A dry-eye assessment helps us identify what may be happening before recommending which eye drops, eyelid care, supplements or in-practice treatments may be appropriate for you.
DRY EYE ASSESSMENT
A dry-eye assessment tailored to your symptoms
Rather than treating every patient the same way, our optometrists assess your eyes and symptoms before recommending a management plan.
Assessment
We discuss your symptoms, history and the situations in which your eyes bother you most.
Identify contributing factors
Our optometrist examines the ocular surface, tear film and eyelids to help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.
Personalised plan
We explain the findings and recommend treatment options appropriate to your individual situation.
ADVANCED TREATMENT OPTIONS
Light-based treatment for suitable dry-eye patients
Warringal Optometrists now offers Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) as one of the treatment options available for selected dry-eye patients.
LLLT uses controlled light energy around the eye area. Depending on your clinical findings, your optometrist may recommend it as part of a broader dry-eye management program.
It is not suitable or necessary for every patient, which is why we assess your eyes before recommending a course of treatment.
What happens next?
If LLLT is considered appropriate, your optometrist will explain the proposed treatment course, what to expect and any other home or in-practice management that may be recommended alongside it.
No obligation to proceed with treatment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Dry eye treatment FAQs
Why are my eyes watering if I have dry eye?
Dryness and irritation of the ocular surface can sometimes trigger excessive watering. An assessment can help determine whether dry eye is contributing to your symptoms.
Do I have to have LLLT?
No. LLLT is only one possible treatment option. Your optometrist will recommend management according to your symptoms and clinical findings.
Are eye drops still useful?
They can be an important part of dry-eye management for some patients. The appropriate treatment depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms.
Can dry eye affect contact lenses?
Yes. Ocular-surface dryness can contribute to contact-lens discomfort, particularly after several hours of wear.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatment varies between patients. If a course of in-practice therapy is recommended, your optometrist will discuss the proposed schedule with you.
What should I do first?
